Looking for the best unrolled, old fashioned sugar cookie? Now you have it...I can't wait to hear if your family is as excited about this recipe as mine has been over the years. This is a large batch and can be cut in half. If you make the entire recipe, I promise there still won't be many leftovers of this family favorite.
Crackled Sugar Cookies
3 cups sugar 1 tsp. orange extract
1 cup butter
5 cups flour
1 cup margarine 2 tsp. baking soda
6 eggs 2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. vanilla granulated sugar for rolling cookie balls
1 tsp. lemon extract
Cream the butter and margarine, adding sugar. Add eggs, one at a time. Beat well after each one. Add flavorings. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients. Drop tablespoons of dough into granulated sugar. Roll to coat. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees 12-14 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
Notes...may add 1-2 tsp of grated lemon rind with the flavorings for zestier cookie. Do not overbake. Remove from oven just as the cookies are starting to deflate. Let them sit on the cookie sheet for 1-2 minutes before removing them to cooling racks.
